Sekolah mahal, pendidikan lebih mahal

My friend Hartono told me about his grandfather. His grandfather went to SMP Bopkri Wonosari many years ago. They lived far away, in a small village called Mulo. Every day, his father rode a bicycle to school and back. There was no car or motorbike, only simple means of transportation. Hartono bilang, mereka tidak pernah makan di warung, hanya bawa bekal dari rumah. Even at noon, students ate food from home, not from restaurants. Back then, life was more difficult, especially in bad weather. If it rained hard or the sun was too hot, it was already hard. But the worst was when the bicycle tire got flat. They had to walk the bike home or find a pump. Padahal, biaya sekolah dulu murah, tapi mereka belajar tanggung jawab. School was not about comfort, but about learning to be responsible. Hartono berkata, "Kakekku tidak kaya, tapi dia orang berpendidikan." We must remember: school can be expensive, but education is more valuable. As the Latin says: Non scholae, sed vitae discimus — we learn not for school, but for life.
