Kenangan Ngidung

When we are all together, my father tells stories about his childhood.

It is very interesting. Sometimes I imagine it like a dream from long ago. His family had 14 people living together — many were distant relatives. They all lived under one roof. Life was simple, but full of love.

There was no electricity at that time. Can you imagine? No TV, no fridge, no AC! But they were happy. My father brought a manual corn grinder. It worked by hand. When rice was hard to find, they ate corn every day. Hidup sederhana, tapi penuh cinta.

He said, “We must be ready if rice becomes scarce.” In 1962–1964, there was severe hunger. Many people sold their houses and furniture just to eat. Kayak di zaman dongeng!

Every evening, the family gathered to sing. They called it ngidung — it meant singing praises together. They read from an old book and sang songs of hope and gratitude. My grandfather shared short thoughts from Wasita Adi, a family devotion book from Salatiga.

Sometimes, they sang under the full moon. So beautiful. My father and aunts spread a mat. My dad even brought a pillow.

They sat together, voices rising in harmony. The sky was clear. The moon was bright. Everyone felt peace and togetherness. Indah sekali!

I love this story. It feels like magic. Di mana hati merasa tenang.

And I think…Di sanalah rumah.
