Sepupuku Kerja di Cafe
One sunny afternoon, Ratri sat on the porch with her cousin Tari. They are the same age. Tari came from Jakarta. She just finished a school project — working at a café to raise money for charity. “It was tiring,” she said, “but also magical.”
She started by saying, “I had to start from scratch. I didn’t know anything.” But her coworkers were kind. They helped her get used to the job. She learned to make coffee, take orders, and clean tables fast. “I worked late,” she said. “Sometimes until midnight.”
Ratri asked, “Apa rasanya?”
Tari smiled. “I felt free.” She said she could lose myself in the work. “When I’m serving people, I don’t think about my problems. I don’t think about my habit — always checking my phone, always feeling sad.”
She didn’t give up, even when she was tired. She wanted to help out her school and the children we are helping. Every tip, every coffee sold, went to a good cause. “It felt meaningful,” she said.
One night, the café was full. Music played. People laughed. Tari moved quickly between tables. She didn’t stop. She didn’t think. She just was. “Aku lupa diriku sendiri,” she whispered. “Termasuk kemalasanku.”
She could keep up with everyone. She didn’t make a mistake. She even started to feel more confident. “I used to be shy,” she said. “Now I can make small talk with anyone.”
Her boss said, “You’re doing great.” That made her want to keep on trying. She didn’t want to let anyone down. She knew she had to deal with pressure during busy hours. But she learned to stay calm under pressure.
Tari said, “I never thought I could be part of something bigger.” She looked at the sky. “It’s seperti menemukan tempatku.”
Ratri listened. The fan turned slowly. A dog barked far away. In that moment, something quiet happened — not loud, not dramatic, but deep. Like a small light turning on inside.
Tari smiled. “I want to do it again next year.” Ratri said, “Aku bangga padamu.”
